Diabetes disproportionately affects lower-income groups and certain racial and ethnic populations, due to limited access to nutritious food, preventive care, and consistent treatment. Demographic patterns reveal that age also plays a role, as older adults have higher prevalence rates. Social factors such as occupation, class, and education strongly influence prevention, management, and mortality. This shows that diseases like diabetes cannot be fully understood outside their social contexts.


 In Brevard County, the nonprofit Aging Matters in Brevard addresses problems linked to aging and health. Their mission is to support independence, dignity, and quality of life for seniors by providing services like Meals on Wheels, transportation, in-home care, and caregiver support.
